What to Expect at Your First Aesthetic Treatment: A Beginner's Guide

Lesley Bell
Aesthetic Practitioner
Booking your first aesthetic treatment is exciting — but it's completely normal to feel a little nervous too. At Anastasia Beauty Aesthetics in Pontefract, we see first-time clients every week, and the most common thing they tell us afterwards is: that was so much easier than I expected! This guide walks you through exactly what happens at your first appointment so you can arrive feeling confident and prepared.
Before Your Appointment
Once you've booked, you'll receive a confirmation and any pre-treatment instructions relevant to your chosen treatment. For most injectable treatments, we recommend avoiding alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, staying well hydrated, and arriving with clean skin (no heavy makeup if possible).
Pre-Treatment Checklist
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before injectable treatments
- Stay well hydrated — drink plenty of water the day before
- Avoid blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, aspirin) for 48 hours if possible
- Arrive with clean skin — remove heavy makeup before your appointment
- Eat a light meal beforehand — don't come on an empty stomach
- Bring a list of any medications or supplements you're taking
The Consultation
Every appointment at Anastasia Beauty Aesthetics begins with a thorough consultation. Nurse Lesley Bell will take a full medical history, ask about your skincare routine, discuss your aesthetic goals, and assess your face or treatment area. This is a genuine conversation to make sure the treatment is right for you and that you'll get the best possible result.
What We Discuss in Your Consultation
- Your medical history and any medications or allergies
- Your aesthetic goals — what you'd like to improve or change
- Realistic expectations — what the treatment can and cannot achieve
- The treatment process — exactly what will happen step by step
- Potential side effects and how to manage them
- Aftercare instructions and follow-up plan
- Pricing and any deposit requirements
The Treatment Itself
Once you're happy to proceed, the treatment begins. For injectable treatments, a topical numbing cream is applied first and left for 20-30 minutes to ensure your comfort. Most clients are surprised by how quick and comfortable the actual injection process is. Treatments like anti-wrinkle injections take just 10-15 minutes; skin boosters and dermal fillers typically take 30-45 minutes.
Immediately After Treatment
After your treatment, you'll be given detailed aftercare instructions specific to what you've had done. Some redness, mild swelling, or small bumps at injection sites are completely normal and typically resolve within a few hours to a few days. You'll be able to drive home and return to most normal activities immediately.
Common Post-Treatment Experiences
- Mild redness or flushing at injection sites — normal, resolves within hours
- Small bumps or swelling — normal, typically gone within 24-48 hours
- Occasional bruising — can last 3-7 days, easily covered with makeup after 24 hours
- Tenderness at injection sites — normal for 1-2 days
- For anti-wrinkle treatments: results appear gradually over 3-5 days
Your Follow-Up
We always schedule a follow-up review 2-4 weeks after your first treatment. This gives us the chance to assess your results, make any minor adjustments if needed, and plan your ongoing maintenance schedule. Ready to take the first step?
